Ed Ruscha: Then & Now

Ed Ruscha: Then & Now

D.A.P./ Distributed Art Publishers, New York, New York, 2005

Description

Between 1962 and 1978, Ed Ruscha produced eighteen small artist's books. Usually self-published and in small print runs, these publications have become seminal works in the history of conceptual art and the photography book. For THEN & NOW, Ruscha produced two continuous panoramic views of the north and south sides of Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, from one end to the other, first in 1973 and again in 2004. The 1973 images were made in black and white, and the 2004 in color.
THEN & NOW is the first artist book that Ruscha has independently created since 1972.

Juror Notes

Ed Ruscha’s book of Hollywood Boulevard was an original concept when he produced the original black-and-white book in 1973. Then and Now revisits the street, this time in color, and it’s a tour de force. The large scale isn’t gratuitous; it works to put you in his car, on Hollywood Boulevard. It’s as much an environmental document as it is an art book.
