Auschwitz Memorial Exhibition Catalogue

Hannah Ueno-Olsen, 1996

Description

We wanted the design of this exhibition catalogue to be simple and effective. Because exhibitions are less than permanent, we needed a catalogue that guaranteed permanency behond the last day of the show. The audience ranged from Holocaust scholars to those who had never heard of the Holocaust.

The most daunting aspect of this project was reproducing the photographs. Because of the long tonal range and warm green tint, all images were reproduced at 200 line screen and printed in black and metallic duotone in order to maintain the original print quality.

The photographs with their handwritten lists of names personalized the experience for the public. In the words of Dr. Bauer, “We learn, so that what is shown here might serve as a warning and as a precedent.”
