Inspiring Reform: Boston’s Arts and Crafts Movement

Inspiring Reform: Boston’s Arts and Crafts Movement

Design/Writing/Research, New York, New York, 1997

Description

This exhibition catalogue evokes the Arts and Crafts tradition in design and bookmaking, but in a contemporary manner. Produced to accompany an exhibition, which we also designed, the book used contemporary fonts (Quadraat) in ways that refer to the ideal book traditions of the Arts and Crafts movement. In place of the dense floral ornamentation of Arts and Crafts books, we have used copious footnotes as a kind of organic, textural frame to the two columns of text. The book interleaves color plates into the uncoated text pages, creating lush interludes within the typographic environment of the historical essays.
