Men in Black

Men in Black

Best Design Incorporated, New York, New York, 1995

Description

This cover was designed to be enigmatic and yet hint at a pivotal part in the novel, where the main character goes to a stock photo agency to look for pseudo-documentary photos for his phony book on UFOlogy. He asks the photo research assistant for photos of “men in black” and develops an adulterous affair with her. This cover was supposed to look like a green file folder for those photos. Within this framework, the cover could allude to so many other aspects of the story--the secrets, darkness, and hidden information--as well as remain different enough from slick book covers sharing shelf space. I think this jacket exhibits a designer’s responsibility to both serve the material and package the book with a unique idea that will prompt the audience pick the book up (as opposed to just doing a nice layout with a production gimmick).
