2007 University of California Regents’ Lecturer: Nicholas Negroponte

Rebeca Méndez Design, Los Angeles, California, 2007

Description

The University of California (UC) Regents’ Lectures are the most important in our UC community, and the poster needs to stand out among a sea of other announcements. As soon as I learned I was going to design a poster for Negroponte, I had the solution in mind: a large black dot (Negroponte)—simple, minimal and iconic. I used the double meaning of the word ponte as both” bridge” and “point.” The large scale of the black point (printed on velvet-finish stock) allowed it to become a “black hole,” connecting to a parallel world. The best moment was when artist and UCLA professor Barbara Kruger was walking toward the elevators at the Broad Art Center: she glanced at the poster, turned around, approached it slowly, reached to the black dot and softly touched it, letting her elevator leave without her.
