Student Poetry Journal: Fire 7-2002 book

Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland, 2002

Description

The project was to create a milestone issue of the MICA Student Poetry Journal, taking it from a stapled handout to a formal publication while still maintaining the continuity of the annual. The theme, to this end, is “The New Fire Is Born from the Ashes of Old Fire.” The task that followed was to define design criteria for the ashes and the fire. One possible strategy seemed to be strictly forbidding the use of explicit images or color schemes to represent fire. The material for the external components, as well as color schemes and typefaces, were selected so that the tangible part of the book subtly conveys the fragility and volatility of ashes, thereby leaving the title “Fire” to be perceived through the poetry itself. A limited budget made it possible—or necessary—to have a handmade cover and packaging.
