The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb

The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb

Best Design Incorporated, New York, New York, 1995

Description

Because this book takes an unpopular stance in an already controversial issue, I designed this cover to show that this book wasn’t “revisionist history” but an accurate portrayal drawn from existing records and some newly available historical documents. The cover was designed to resemble a headline from The New York Times, as it is universally regarded as “the paper of record” and its headline style is a design that is recognizable to the intellectual audience that this book speaks to. The spine is a side view of a Sunday Times, notorious for being thick, like this book. I personally like this design for taking a design vernacular and presenting it as a document, out of context, in a book store. I also feel it communicates the integrity of the material and presents it in a clear, appealing way.
