Muhammad Ali Center

2x4, Inc., New York, New York, 2006

Description

Approaching Louisville, Kentucky, from the air or the primary highway, a visitor might spot a building-scale series of portraits and figures in the distance. As they approach the structure, the Muhammad Ali Center, the images slowly dissolve into an abstract pattern of rectangular shapes. Based on photographer Howard L. Bingham’s historic portraits of Ali, the façade images were carefully constructed from one-by-two-foot ceramic tiles in nine custom colors. The 16,500-square-foot façade was created by Glen Cummings at 2x4, Inc. in New York City.

Juror Notes

“Feels like information design and architecture. Looks like an image that is coming together. Super cool! Very respectful, very intelligent use of the image. One of the judges’ faves.”
