Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture

Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture

Stephen Kinder Design Partnership, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2004

Description

Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture is an exhibition catalog. Using both historic and contemporary references, the catalog was intended to frame the work included in the exhibition in a serious and comprehensive way. Many of the graphic and material solutions used the title of the book as a conceptual guide. The terms “beautiful” and “losers” presented a multitude of forms unto themselves, but when juxtaposed, these forms coalesced into natural spirit that would guide the design through many of its darkest hours. Take the cover, for example. On it you will find customized typography referencing paint-overs—an emblematic form of anti-graffiti—with each letterform struggling for visibility. The names of the artists are typeset with these struggling letterforms and then stamped with gold foil into beautiful red cloth. This struggling typography treated so “beautifully” is just one example of the spirit in action.
