Great American Paintings

John Begg, 1944

Description

Juror Notes

A text measure of readable width is accommodated to the wide page necessary for the pictures by placing side headings in brown on extra-generous side margins. Hand lettering gives sensitivity to the title-page and text titles and draws them together. However, the gravure plates, while on the same good paper as the rest of the book, are tied to the text neither in color nor in lay-out, a usual defect in art picture books. While the monochrome gravure reproduces paintings faithfully, the three-color gravure, used for a few plates, falls wide of fidelity; but this defect is being remedied in a second edition which will contain four-color letterpress plates.
