On the Sublime: Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, James Turrell book

studio blue, Chicago, Illinois, 2001

Description

On the Sublime accompanied a small exhibition of minimalist works by Mark Rothko, Yves Klein and James Turrell. The exhibit included color-field paintings and light installations that are quietly captivating, and we tried to evoke the same spirit in this simple book. The cover is delicate and evanescent; pages are thick and sober; transparent tints separate chapters; and the typography is (we hope) both retiring and monumental.

Juror Notes

“It is sublime. It’s very minimal. There’s just such gorgeous, elegant type. It’s unconventional and lovely, and I really appreciate that it’s not black type.”

“It’s 1960s-evocative with a subtle 1980s book design. It’s not using something that’s overtly fashionable. It’s very modest.”

“Somebody looked at that rag. They worked very hard on the details. It’s exquisite.”
