War

de.MO, New York, New York, 2003

Description

War began as a collaboration between the photo agency VII and de.Mo, a design and publishing firm in Millbrook, New York. The relationship between the photographers and the principal designer, Giorgio Baravalle, created an unusual form of partnership in that both parties could be interpreted as clients, in a sense, making the outcome highly personal to all involved. Each phase of the book’s creation then became subject to much negotiation and debate, with animated discussions and heartfelt opinions. Deciding on the title, for instance, took one month of colorful exchanges. Once that was established, the format of the one book, or potentially, three separate books, needed to be formalized. This project was thus unique in that a conventional client did not in fact exist. The inspiration and subsequent decisions regarding the project were done democratically with all voices considered, particularly that of the designer and publisher. In the end, one volume, entitled War, was produced.

This is a history book. It marks and illustrates a precise and important period for the world to observe. Its goal is to enlighten the reader/viewer. It is to tell the truth. Much of War’s appearance was dictated by its content. This had to be a big book because it represents a big subject. The elegant simplicity of the cover belies the complex reality it contains. The images have the same monumental qualities that the book itself has. Part of the impact of this volume is its sheer size. It is weighty and thought provoking. As such, if it makes the reader stop and think, it has had its desired impact.

Juror Notes

“The scale and weight of this volume make it as much a burden to the viewer as its subject matter.” Jack Woody
“The form and weight of the book are appropriate for the content. However, the typography is asthmatic. The title is “War”—you don’t whisper.” Lars Müller
