1996 Bay Street Theatre Poster

1996 Bay Street Theatre Poster

Paul Davis Studio, New York, New York, 1996

Description

“Creativity” and “strategy” seem to be contradictory terms to me—to be creative requires being open to what may come, while being strategic seems to be a matter of figuring out how to manipulate events to produce a desired result, so I don’t think there can be a creative strategy.

This poster was created for the fifth anniversary of the Bay Street Theater. The idea of the hand came to me right away and I did lots of drawings of hands combining faces. None of them were satisfactory until I simply made a line from the hand representing an arm and drew the clown. The thing that makes this poster appealing and unique for me are the elements of surprise, humor, and mystery.
