This book, by Rafe Martin, is based on a story from the Brothers Grimm, but our version is not for young children. The challenge was to make the image on the jacket intriguing and graphic, yet compelling, and appealing to both girls and boys. The cover artist, Dennis Clouse, was chosen for his very clever, flat yet evocative style and his creative sense of color. He really understood how to make the image work compositionally on the front cover, and yet he managed to not give away that it is the young man’s arm that is a wing. Part of the art is continued on the back of the jacket, completing this simple and fascinating image. The font P22Vincent was chosen because its letter shapes echoed the look of the feathers in the art. And where the type is curved, it very gently reminds the viewer of a wing, and beautifully implies motion. The result is powerful and arresting.

Hand-lettered type and image beautifully married—a completely realized cover design. Foil stamping of wing fragments on case is a beautiful, thoughtful addition.
