Approach: Volume’s design team worked very closely with the photographer, Leslie Williamson, to ensure a result that would make all invested parties happy and respect the book’s content as much as possible.
Effectiveness: Leslie and Rizzoli love the book, and it’s already into its third printing not even six months after its release. (Not that sales are the major criteria for evaluation as the design does not necessarily factor into those sales.) We think the design is successful because it puts what is most important—the photography—up front and doesn’t get in the way other than to help approximate the spatial experience of these designers’ workspaces. The design also echoes the time period of the designers’ heyday but in a way that still feels contemporary and “handcrafted” through typography, layout and materials.
Juror Notes
Sounds like an oxymoron but doesn’t look it. The “window” effect on the display type is inspired.
