The “White Out” article in the April 2002 issue of Metropolis posed many of the usual problems faced in editorial design. We were given 20 minutes to shoot architect Renzo Piano. The building was a mere concept. The renderings and model shots from the Piano studio were usable, but could not be run very large. And we needed to create a graphic to show a specific detail of the project.

Metropolis runs process stories on a regular basis, but we thought this one was particularly newsworthy, since it would be one of the first major additions to the New York skyline in the wake of September 11. The design treatment is a sort of homage to the newspaper of record—an article about The New York Times’ new building, as if it had appeared in the paper itself.
