The Terrible Gustave Doré

The Terrible Gustave Doré

Edward Alonzo Miller, 1944

Description

Juror Notes

Here Doré’s pictures are used as he intended them to be, as illustrations, and not as separate plates, the text of a critical essay running around them instead of preceding them. The wood-engravings are very well reproduced in line, all their fine cutting remaining sharp, and the openly-set text, legible for its rather long line, complementing them and letting them breathe in their uncrowded arrangement.

Peter Beilenson, Paul McPharlin, Ernst Reichl (Jurors)
