Andy Warhol: The Day the Factory Died

Stark Design, New York, New York, 2006

Description

Andy Warhol: The Day the Factory Died marks the 20th anniversary of Andy Warhol’s death. The memorial service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and funeral is a photographic narrative of the last days of an iconic era. The bulk of the book captures the famous and infamous attendees that packed the cathedral, from Roy Lichtenstein and Lou Reed to Diane von Furstenberg and Ian Schrager. This is followed by over 45 intimate letters from Warhol’s friends and acquaintances—testimony to the influence he had on their lives. The last section, printed in dark tones, is reserved for exclusive photos of the burial ceremony taken in Warhol’s native Pittsburgh by Sam Bolton.

The distinctive black-on-black cover and gold foil-stamping, silver placeholder ribbon and black leaf edges reflect the elements of a bible or prayer book. The unexpected format (size and shape) is unique for a photo book but, in this case, is appropriate for the subject matter. It marks the solemn tone of the book and allows the reader to engage with the photography in a more intimate way, while also referencing Warhol’s fascination with religious iconography.
