This book was created to commemorate the exhibition of the E.M. Bakwin Collection of Asmat Art. This private collection features exotic wood carvings from Asmat, a cultural group located on the western coast of the island of New Guinea. The book is divided into two sections, the first of which presents the history of art in the culture of the Asmat people. The essay for this section details their roots in head-hunting and cannibalism and its influence on their wood carvings. The second section showcases artwork from the Bakwin collection and provides an explanation of the work, as well as the meaning of the symbols found in each piece.
