The Saint Johns Bible Website

Larsen, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2009

Description

Smithsonian Magazine called the Saint John’s Bible “one of the extraordinary undertakings of our time.” The website showcasing this handwritten, hand-illuminated work had to be equally extraordinary, while respecting the artistic integrity of the Bible itself. The redesign combined three separate sites—ecommerce, development and project background—into one rich, cohesive user experience. Opulent imagery of brushes, goose quills, ink sticks, powdered pigments, gold leaf and other calligraphic tools and materials represents the skill involved in the creation of this artistic masterpiece. “Explore Each Volume” enables visitors to page dynamically through the Bible’s seven volumes.

Juror Notes

The Saint John’s Bible website is a beautifully executed documentation of a painstaking process. The navigation is clear and balances simplicity and depth.
