OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music: 1948–1980

Stoltze Design, Boston, Massachusetts, 2000

Description

OHM is a large and eclectic mix of important contributions to electronic music spanning almost four decades. The challenge was to find a cohesive graphic and tactical device to package the three CDs with related stories, photographs and liner notes—all within a fairly modest budget. The three CD digipak and 96-page book are housed in a transparent plastic slipcase, custom-designed for OHM; the outer packaging incorporates the electrical schematic line art of a theremin—one of the first electronic instruments ever created. The OHM logo mimics the visual language of the electronic diagrams. Additional schematics were combined with historical and documentary photography as well as stock photos manipulated with PhotoShop. The design reflects the retro-futuristic quality of this music as well as the contrast between the high and the low technology used to create the music.
