Vintage Books, New York, New York, 2000

Description

The original Carol Carson jacket design had a Breughel painting on the front. For the paperback, my first solution was, of course, to put pancakes on the cover. When the author didn’t like that approach I tried a design that had two guys wrestling on the cover. (Editor: Are you sure those guys are, um, wrestling?) Next came the crying baby cover (perhaps this said more about me than the book), then the always-popular “vintage clip art road sign arrows” design and the pancake/Breughel compromise special. Finally, and to great acclaim, we settled on the floating head pictograph design. Believe me, it makes all the sense in the world if you read the book.
