One Hole in the Road

One Hole in the Road

Martha Rago, 1996

Description

My inspiration for illustrating this children’s book came from the books that I loved and enjoyed as a child. In working with this designer, I feel that we achieved the look and feel of those children’s books from the 1960s, but with a contemporary twist. The typeface and colors certainly reflect that era, but the artwork and, in particular, the choice of paper are definitely current.

This book required that I scale down my illustration technique and style. What appears to be extremely simple was actually an arduous task of paring down shapes and colors to their essential form. The experience of illustrating this book has changed the way I approach my work as whole.
