Le Mystère de la Charité de Jeanne D’Arc

Le Mystère de la Charité de Jeanne D’Arc

Victor Hammer, 1944

Description

Juror Notes

In every respect this is one of the most distinguished pieces of book workmanship of the year, unified by the touch of one man in everything from the metal-cut on the title-page to the presswork and binding. This, in white and blue cloth stamped in gold, is apparently meant to be temporary, and its color has no echo in the body of the book. The prose sections of the handset text are not justified at the right, so they have a slightly irregular edge, to harmonize with the unequal lines of the verse sections, and passages which would ordinarily have been in italics are printed with the same roman but in dull red for emphasis. On the excellent white paper used, this gives a delectable richness.
