Western Words: A Dictionary of the Range, Cow Camp, and Trail

Western Words: A Dictionary of the Range, Cow Camp, and Trail

Will Ransom, 1944

Description

Juror Notes

The pompous, tiresome look of a dictionary page has been triumphantly avoided by the designer, who calls this “a problem in legibility under wartime conditions.” He departs from established practice in using a large size of a typeface different from that of the text, rather than a boldface, to set off words from their definitions; in off-center running heads opposite centered folios; and in an open, free, easy-swinging two-page-spread title-page. Not only was legibility achieved, but a cheerful, American-looking sort of book.

Peter Beilenson, Paul McPharlin, Ernst Reichl (Jurors)
