Venetian

Andrew Byrom, Long Beach, California, 2009

Description

With my three-dimensional typeface designs, I try to push the limitations of materials (and the industrial processes associated with them) and let my finding fundamentally shape my designs.

Venetian is a stencil typeface design conceived originally as part of a commission by Elle Decoration (UK). It was inspired by the forms created by a venetian blind. Opening and closing the blinds creates the effect of weight: bold and light become open and closed.

Juror Notes

Where design meets art.

Creative and charming typeface design. I especially liked the three versions, or positions: closed, regular and open.

Best use of venetians that I have seen in a long time.
