NorthSouthEastWest-A 360° View of Climate Change
Browns, London, England, 2004
Description
The brief was to conceive, design and produce a piece of communication to be given in person to presidents and ministers, chairmen and chief executives, not just to illustrate the causes and impacts of global climate change, but also to highlight the solutions being implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. The solution is a book and accompanying worldwide touring exhibition that focuses on 10 climate issues in 12 locations, and features 10 Magnum photographers and 10 contributors as diverse as Tony Blair and Leonardo DiCaprio. Given its audience, the book has to look, feel and sound like the most significant and compelling work on climate change to date. A large size of 11 by 11 inches-chosen for its sheer physicality-showcases the photography to best effect. It reads in a calendar format. The book has two paper stocks (both FSC), a silk section for all 10 case studies sandwiched between uncoated intro and outro sections. The project has been wonderfully received, with a number of organizations approaching the Climate Group as a result. The exhibition was held in the Science Museum in London and has so far visited Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Oslo, San Francisco and Brussels, with Japan and New York set to play host later in the year. The printers and all paper used were FSC accredited, and the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the book are being offset via certified gold standard projects.
