Plain Heathen Mischief is a novel about the moral decline and ill fortune of a Baptist minister. Martin Clark’s tale is one of redemption, a modern recasting of the Job myth. I wanted to portray the main character’s religious crisis in such a way as to suggest the meddling of an outside agent (the defacing of the priest on the jacket). A side note: Unfortunately, the real-life Salesians, the followers of Don Bosco, took umbrage with my depiction of their spiritual leader on the front-of-jacket. In my defense (all you Salesians who might happen to come to the AIGA show), Plain Heathen Mischief is a deeply religious book, though irreverently so.
