Approaching Louisville, Kentucky, from the air or the primary highway, a visitor might spot a building-scale series of portraits and figures in the distance. As they approach the structure, the Muhammad Ali Center, the images slowly dissolve into an abstract pattern of rectangular shapes. Based on photographer Howard L. Bingham’s historic portraits of Ali, the façade images were carefully constructed from one-by-two-foot ceramic tiles in nine custom colors. The 16,500-square-foot façade was created by Glen Cummings at 2x4, Inc. in New York City.
