Corcoran Glimpse Book
KINETIK, Inc., Washington, District of Columbia, 2009
Description
The Corcoran College of Art + Design—a small, prestigious school in the heart of Washington, D.C.—wanted to give potential students and their parents a glimpse of life at Corcoran. KINETIK’s personal Corcoran experiences (the design team is composed of current faculty and former students) exposed common conceptual threads: culture, creativity and community. The design solution weaves these concepts together around “exposure” and its many meanings—discovery, revelation, experience—all of which are part of Corcoran students’ lives. Inspired by seeing the world through a different lens, students continually absorb the culture of the intimate school environment as well as the city and community at large. This internal, personal discovery and growth is complemented by students’ exposure to a wider community—the relationships and professional contacts they develop as they embark on careers. The multiple meanings of exposure are carried throughout the design solution, using vivid color, poignant student testimonials, dynamic photography and one book wrapping around and exposing another. The small, intimate book conveys the experience of the Corcoran College of Art + Design as it envelops the larger representation of the school itself: the amazing creative work of its students.
Juror Notes
The prospective student’s experience of this piece would be an excellent representation of the school. An interesting adventure with unique construction, type and imagery. Very fitting for the “Discover Life” title.
