Amaryllis, Inc.

The General Design Company, Washington, DC, Washington, District of Columbia

Description

Project brief: Amaryllis, Inc. started as a simple flower shop in 1989 and has since developed into a premier special-event company, garnering awards and frequent praise in publications like Bride & Groom, Grace Ormonde and the Washingtonian. Their previous website was an outdated Flash site that lacked visual impact and did not convey the level of sophistication or the high-end level of attention to detail that they take pride in. The primary objective was to modernize their look and to ensure that it was clear their capabilities included more than flower deliveries—providing everything from flowers for your grandmother to event design for small parties to big weddings and corporate galas.

Approach: Amaryllis often talks about how there is nothing standard about what they do and there is no cookie-cutter formula. They approach each arrangement and event with a very customized and tailored intent. After noting how most of their competitors’ sites were equally lackluster and generic as their original site, we took a much bolder and highly visual approach. After all, floral and event design is all about the visual. The focus is on playing up the impact of their work through images that span the entire browser window, allowing for smaller details and information to come up should the viewer want to see more.

Effectiveness: One of the most important objectives was to depict Amaryllis as a high-end floral and event design company and to ensure that they rose above the competition. With the majority of their competition leaning toward pastel colors and stock photos of flower arrangements, we felt the focus on the visual impact of their work truly elevates them as a more sophisticated and unique choice. Analytics were not available for their previous site so we are unable to compare the current site data. However, Amaryllis continuously receives high praise from their peers and their client base. Based on the number of calls from prospective clients who have found us from the Amaryllis site, we feel that we have been successful in giving the company an impressive site that is a great platform for highlighting their work.

Juror Notes

Good example of a small business realizing the importance of design and successfully targeting its customers. Visually expresses that it’s not only about products but also about experience. The great photos make it very engaging, showing that the process is just as beautiful as the end result.

Makes something vanilla into something larger and more complex. Could have lost the script A, but love it otherwise.
