Massimo and Lella Vignelli studied architecture in Venice and at MIT. Together they established the Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture in Milan (1960), as well as the offices of Vignelli Associates (1971) and Vignelli Designs (1978) in New York. Their work includes graphic and corporate identity programs, publication design, architectural graphics, and exhibition, interior, furniture, and consumer product design for many leading American and European companies and institutions, including American Airlines, IBM, Xerox, Knoll, and the New York subway. An exhibition of the Vignellis' work toured Europe between 1989 and 1993, traveling to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Helsinki, London, Budapest, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Munich, Paris, and Prague. Among their many awards are the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Industrial Arts Medal (1973); the AIGA Gold Medal (1983); Interior Design Hall of Fame (1988); The Brooklyn Museum Modernism Design Award for Lifetime Achievement (1995); the Gran Premio Triennale di Milano; the Compasso d'Oro; and the first Presidential Design Award, presented by President Ronald Reagan. Massimo Vignelli has taught and lectured on design in the major cities and universities in the United States and abroad.
