Cuba Diario Visual
Teikna Graphic Design Inc., Toronto, Ontario, 1999
Description
I was approached by the photographer Evan Dion, who had gone to Cuba for two weeks and came back with a lot of great film he wanted to translate into a book. To make sense of all the intense, strong images I felt it was important to identify some themes and decided that the overriding one was “gesture.” The cover was the first element I designed. The “hugging statue” sums up the spirit of the book and the photographer’s vision. My design solution was to simply let the photographs create a narrative. The use of type and white space is meant to accentuate the elements that make the cover photograph work.
