Silence of Women

Ahmann Kadlec Associates, Palo Alto, California, 2004

Description

The Silence of Women booklet—created in conjunction with the first exhibition of Carol Turner’s artwork—provided the opportunity to showcase the work in the broader context of women’s moral, cultural and political voice in the world. The artist was looking for a piece that she could use to broaden interest in her work, shed light on the importance of the subject matter and inspire young women.
Through close collaboration with the artist, I chose to approach the booklet as one would experience the artwork in the exhibit. The bold cover words pull the reader into the piece and create a visual metaphor for Silence. I interwove the artwork with pertinent statistics and the artist’s Letter Wall quotes from influential women. The booklet was divided into three sections that the work spoke to: “Silence,” “Fear” and “Voice”—“Voice” bringing the inspiration and uplift needed after the somber import of “Silence” and “Fear.”
The booklet has been an instrumental tool to the artist in procuring both grant money and future exhibition commitments.
