The IBM Software Station is the industry’s first software “vending machine,” enabling consumers to test, buy, and take delivery of software directly from the kiosk, via satellite transmission. Using space station and satellite metaphors, the designers of the 10' x 4' x 4' kiosk sought to create a striking, sculptural in-store presence that was eye-catching and futuristic, yet approachable. This revolutionary concept in software retailing eliminates costly packaging and marketing materials, and saves the retailer valuable floor space by allowing high-volume sales from compact footprint, while providing customers with a more direct, interactive, and efficient purchasing experience.
