Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography
Alfred A. Knopf Publishing Inc., New York, New York, 1995
Description
Upon first seeing the manuscript for Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography, by Gail Levin, I was impressed with its sheer size. After reading the first 100 pages or so, it was the fresh viewpoint the biographer brought to his work and life that made me want to give a special interpretation to the jacket. the chosen painting, “Four Lane Road”, seemed such a perfect proportion to use as the binding, which I was able to use full frame, and without any type obscuring the figures on the front. Vellum jackets have been used to great effect before; for this particular book it provides a film in front of the viewer, with the typography separating the man from the woman in the landscape, a separation echoing Hopper’s own ambiguity and distance from his wife and the scene of domesticity.
