Love Thy Neighbor
Alfred A. Knopf Publishing Inc., New York, New York, 1995
Description
Love Thy Neighbor clarifies the war in the former Yugoslavia in a very strightforward fashion. It answers the questions of when and how clearly. Peter Maass the American author grew up in suburbia the way many of his intended audience trying to understand this conflict did. The cover needed to reflect this directness in a raw and visceral way.
The original comp for this project was letterpress printed. I had originally thought the art I created on my press would be photographed and reproduced by 4 color process. The paper I used for the comp was so liked that it was decided that the finished cover be printed on it. Like the content of the book itself there needed to be a tactile presence to the cover. The typography is direct as is the style of the book itself. The colors used speak of earth and ashes and blood.
I am pleased with the outcome of this cover because of its ultimate simplicity and also how closely it resembles the original letterpressed comp.
