Euclid: Elements of Geometry, Book One
Bruce Rogers, 1944
Description
Juror Notes
The text pages of this divertissement are delightful, with their Aldine touch of small roman capitals and italic lower-case letters, suggesting the Renaissance without being stuffy. The variegated colors in the diagrams have the bright excitement of a children’s picture book. The calligraphic Q.E.D.’s add an ebullient flourish. Compared with the text, the title-page is thin because the designer has limited himself to the size of the text type. Conversely, the binding seems heavy-handed\, and lacking in the sprightliness of the body.
Peter Beilenson, Paul McPharlin, Ernst Reichl (Jurors)
