The Book of Holes

Poul Lange Design, New York, New York, 2006

Description

While writing and designing this young children’s book, my focus was on creating a strong interaction between the reader, the child and the book. The physical hole through the center invites a finger, an eye, a thought. Every page introduces a new topic and often poses questions to launch discussion between adults and children. Entertaining and capturing the interest of adults who do the reading struck me as important; bored readers are boring to children. Thus the visual and verbal humor, the absurd collages that can be experienced and discussed on many levels, the numerous tiny details that hopefully continue to reveal themselves through many readings. On the left pages, the text is wrapped around the hole to form pictograms, so children, even if they are too young to read, can make some sense of the typography.

Juror Notes

“A die-cut hole through the entire book is the focus of this children’s book about the holes in our bodies. Honest presentation of information is enhanced by whimsical drawing.”
