I Am a Beautiful Monster
The MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2007
Description
I Am a Beautiful Monster presented several layers of text that needed to be woven into a coherent whole. Picabia’s multiform writings (which included prose, poetry, aphorisms, manifestos and screenplays) needed to be integrated with the critical apparatus that held it all together. Picabia’s often aggressive typographical irregularities required special attention. The challenge was to balance anarchy with elegance, and to find an order to it all without losing the eccentric, exuberant and Dadaist character of the contents.
Juror Notes
This powerful, sophisticated play of typography comments on Picabia’s work in an appropriate and sensitive manner. The interpretation of content and beautiful gait and scale of page elements is marvelous.
