Masterpieces of Painting from the National Gallery of Art
Charles Beck, 1944
Description
Juror Notes
The halftone color reproductions are as beautifully printed as anything of the sort that has been done in America recently, with high fidelity to the color of the original paintings. The introductory matter and pages of text facing the plates, while too wide a measure for easy legibility, lack the pomposity which might well have weighted such a volume, and give minimum distraction from the plates, but they unfortunately go so far in the right direction as to be weak and flavorless—as is the title-page. The end-sheet design is well scaled to the size of the volume, which is a heavy one because of its enamel stock.
