Things That Fall from the Sky cover
Pantheon Books, New York, New York, 2002
Description
I was asked to design a hardcover book jacket that would exemplify the author’s quirky style of storytelling and fantastic imagination. I was to approach this collection of short stories as an adult fairy tale that would appeal to the masses but hold its own distinctive style. The concept was to play off the title and create a new perspective on the idea of falling out of the sky with a twist. I used the jacket along with the preprinted case to make a visual effect through the use of vellum, ink and type. If you look carefully you will see a baby carriage falling out of the sky on the case. The ink had to keep an opaque quality so the baby carriage would not be noticeable, and the cloud pattern had to match the vellum jacket to the case.
