The design structure of this book supports the notion that collections are built, not born, and that the way artifacts are acquired, organized, and displayed reflects a culture’s values, ideas, and preoccupations at a given point in time. Here, text, art, and captions that refer to artifacts in Philadelphia collections are treated as complete thoughts in a series of spreads so that the reader can immediately grasp the connections.
