I.D. magazine, New York, New York, 2004

Description

I.D. Magazine was redesigned in January 2004 to accommodate new editorial sections and to refresh a look that had gone fundamentally unchanged for more than a decade. The redesign was accomplished in-house by I.D.’s design director, Nico Schweizer, and art director, Kobi Benezri.

The approach involved conversations between the art department and editorial staff to determine both the practical requirements of the new design and the fresh, approachable and respectful sensibility we wanted I.D. to convey. The solution hinged on the specification of a new typeface, Coranto, created by Gerard Unger specifically for publications. It also required formats for new departments (including a complex back-of-the-book section), and display typography that eased navigation between familiar and unfamiliar parts of the book. Paper stock was upgraded to improve the quality of reproductions.

Since I.D. was relaunched in its new format, there have been dramatic increases in subscription renewals, newsstand sales and the number of advertising pages sold.
