Art in Public Places Forum—Voice Poster
Jennifer Sterling Design, San Francisco, California, 1996
Description
This poster begins an Art in Public Places dialogue that voices the concern of harassment in the work environment. Structuring the type so the emesis words (words embedded in a compound word) “men” and “ass” are obvious in the word “harassment” evokes several responses (or dialogue). First, “I didn’t realize it was there.” (Similarly, this is the response when upper management is confronted with harassment.) Or the idea that it’s about sex or only instigated by men perpetuates the frequent misuse of the definition of harassment and diminishes the response to a situation when it really does occur.
