Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South catalogue

studio blue, Chicago, Illinois, 2001

Description

This catalogue accompanied an exhibition that presented the relationship between Gauguin and Van Gogh—focusing on a ten-week period when they worked together—and the powerful influence that interaction had on their art.

Context was critical in the curators’ story so we fleshed out the catalogue with detailed perspectival maps showing the locations and vantage points of the artists’ paintings, and with daily calendars chronicling their work, correspondence, the weather and local events. The real trick here was presenting disparate, obscure information in a cohesive way—and we went through numerous revisions to get the final result.

Juror Notes

“Every detail is considered, from the brilliantly designed heads to the nice maps. This is a catalogue with added value.”
