The Second Plane
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, New York, 2007
Description
Four years ago I was asked to design a jacket for a book called The Zero by Jess Walter, which takes place during and just after 9/11. I submitted four different illustrations that attempted to approach the issue from an abstract point of view (how else would one approach it?), all composed of simple shapes representing the towers. They were all summarily killed. Cut to several months ago: Chip is working on the new set of Martin Amis’ 9/11 essays and the author is proving difficult. I dig out the old comp, Chip throws on some type, I jigger it, and here we are. The moral of this story is don’t throw out your rejected comps (alternately titled: laziness pays).
