Having appreciated the eclecticism, beauty and timeless craftsmanship of Other Lives’ previous work, I was excited to have the opportunity to work on this project. The objective was to echo the sense of isolation expressed in the song by using a flat, pared-down approach to depictions of random situations that are both mundane and nostalgic. The video serves to create a flow between the sharply disparate nature of everyday experiences and our underlining interconnectivity.

The labor-intensive process took on the quality of a repetitious craft such as knitting and, while completely digital, captured an imperfection that could not have been achieved through the use of automated approaches to animation and video manipulation. The result is something akin to a moving collage.

Many of the collage entries we saw this year felt tired and dated. With its fresh, simple, visual approach, this entry was an instant favorite.
