The Language of Pain
W. W. Norton and Company, New York, New York, 2009
Description
This book is written by a doctor who found himself “incapacitated by a devastatingly painful illness.” Feeling isolated and unable to communicate what he was going through, he had to learn how use metaphors to describe his pain in order to break down the walls it had built. I thought a bird flying out of a mouth would say “relief,” but had my doubts that an image like that would make it through the approval process. Luba just nailed it.
Juror Notes
Nice use of color and carryover of image onto spine and back cover.
