For Jean Grolier & His Friends
Jerry Kelly LLC, New York, New York, 2009
Description
For the 125th anniversary of the Grolier Club (America’s oldest book club) it was decided to publish a complete bibliography of all publications and a complete list of all exhibitions, both in great detail and heavily illustrated. With almost 500 books and 500 exhibitions, the final volume runs over 500 pages of somewhat technical matter, utilizing multiple sizes and fonts on each page for information requiring special typographic treatment. For this monumental volume, the designer persuaded the club to strive for the best materials and processes, including letterpress text, tipped-in fine-line screen offset illustrations, imported mould-made text paper and hand binding. It was not easy to convince the powers that be at the Grolier Club to go for such expensive production values but in the end, the council and membership were pleased with this deluxe edition.
Juror Notes
In the tradition of fine bookmaking—and benefitting from advancements in color reproduction on uncoated paper—this title combines letterpress and offset printing in a beautifully conceived and executed book.
